Resolving missing image segments with EUMETCast systems

If you're experiencing missing image segments or entire files received via the EUMETCast service, this is likely to be caused by the TelliCast software being unable to process data quick enough.

The steps below describe how to increase the TelliCast throughput and prevent missing data in the majority of cases. If the PC has a CPU with less than 8 cores or uses hard disk storage, it may need upgrading or replacing for a complete resolution.

Bear in mind that missing data can also be caused by very heavy rain or antenna misalignment affecting the satellite signal.

Set up a RAM disk

A RAM disk is a piece of software that uses a portion of the PC's RAM as a virtual disk. This is much faster than even the best SSD, and doesn't suffer from wear.

We recommend using the AIM Toolkit RAM disk software which is free and open-source. Download it from the project homepage using the link below.

Download AIM Toolkit

To install it, simply extract the contents of the AIMtk.zip file, then run the install.bat file. Use the default installation options.

Once installed, there will be two additional icons on the desktop. Double-click the RamDisk Configuration icon:

In the AIM Toolkit window which appears, configure the settings as shown below:

After configuring the settings, click OK.

If a window then appears warning that the fast startup feature of Windows is enabled, click Shutdown settings, then Change settings that are currently unavailable, untick Turn on fast startup, click OK, and finally Close.

An 8GB RAM disk will then be created and mounted at R: each time the PC starts up.

In the RamDisk (R:) Properties window which appears afterwards, untick Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties, then OK.

Adjust the TelliCast configuration

To configure TelliCast to use the RAM disk and a larger receive buffer, follow the instructions below:

  1. Close all running instances of TelliCast by right-clicking their icons in the tray (next to the clock).
  2. Navigate to C:\EUMETSAT\EUMETCast using File Explorer.
  3. Make backup copies of the following files:
    • cast-client_bas.ini
    • cast-client_hvs-1.ini
    • cast-client_hvs-2.ini
    • cast-client_hvs-3.ini
    • cast-client_hvs-4.ini
  4. Make the following changes to each of the above files, saving them as you go:
    • Under [channel_defaults] change the receive_buffer_size value to 500000000
    • Under [parameters] change the tmp_directory value to R:\EUMETCast\tmp\bas
  5. Make backup copies of the following files:
    • cast-client-channels_bas.ini
    • cast-client-channels_hvs-1.ini
    • cast-client-channels_hvs-2.ini
    • cast-client-channels_hvs-3.ini
    • cast-client-channels_hvs-4.ini
  6. Make the following changes to each of the above files, saving them as you go:
    • Under [channel] change the target_directory value to R:\EUMETCast\received\bas\default
    • Under [channel] change the tmp_directory value to R:\EUMETCast\tmp\bas
  7. Start all instances of TelliCast again using their icons on the desktop (BAS, HVS-1, HVS-2, etc).

Add anti-virus software exclusions

To ensure anti-virus software doesn't cause issues with TelliCast, the R:\EUMETCast folder should be excluded from scanning. To do this in Microsoft Defender, follow the instructions below:
  1. Click the Windows icon in the taskbar, then click Settings.
  2. Click Privacy & security on the left.
  3. Click Windows Security.
  4. Click Virus & threat protection. This will open the Windows Security app.
  5. Under Virus & threat protection settings, click Manage settings.
  6. Scroll down to the Exclusions heading and click Add or remove exclusions, clicking Yes when asked to allow changes to your device.
  7. Click + Add an exclusion and select Folder.
  8. Navigate to R:\EUMETCast and click Select Folder.
It's also worth checking that all the other required anti-virus exclusions are set up as described in this support article.

Adjust the Geostationary Ingester settings

To configure Geostationary Ingester to use the RAM disk, follow the instructions below, starting with the EUMETCast HRIT ingester tab:
  1. Click the File acquisition sub-tab.
  2. Make a note of the current path shown in the Look for files in box, then click the Choose... button to the right of it.
  3. Navigate to R:\EUMETCast\received\bas\default and click OK.
  4. Click Apply settings at the bottom of the Geostationary Ingester window (just above the Lock... button).
Repeat the above for the other relevant ingester tabs (EUMETCast MTG FCI, EUMETCast MTG LI, etc).

Adjust the Windows performance settings

To increase the priority that Windows gives to background services, follow the instructions below:
  1. Right-click the Windows icon in the taskbar, then click Run.
  2. Enter SystemPropertiesPerformance.exe in the Open box, then click OK.
  3. Click the Advanced tab.
  4. In the Processor scheduling area, select Background services.
  5. Click OK.
If you find that Geostationary Ingester is no longer able to keep up with incoming data after changing the priority setting, revert it back to Programs.
